NIH STARTUP Central POC and NSF I-CORP Grants were awarded to Professor Donna Bandy, Physics Department, to explore a cooperative business with Oklahoma State University that corrects difficult problems related to xerostomia (dry mouth). She and her team plan to resolve many of these difficulties by integrating their training and expertise in fluid flow and laser dynamics with the outstanding 3-D printing facilities available through OSU. Their cutting-edge research includes a provisional patent accepted in November 2023.

Interviews with people suffering from Xerostomia are conducted in person or by Zoom Meetings. Contact Dr. Bandy (405 744 7488) or the Physics Office (405 744 5796) to schedule an interview.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Modelling the Behavior of Nonlinear Optical Systems

We are interested in modelling the behavior of nonlinear optical systems, active and passive, with varying degrees of complication and real-world application. These studies include both the fundamental physics of systems and their application to specific devices. Our work consists of steady-state, stability, and dynamic analyses; it involves the interplay between stochastic and deterministic "forces" that drive the systems from one state to another. In optical frequencies, laser studies include the laser with injected signal, homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening, plane wave, longitudinal and transverse mode structures. At microwave frequencies, we study dynamics in a monovelocity-atomic beam maser. Similarly, we explore light driven passive systems such as optical bistability and optomechanical systems. We incorporate such theoretical tools as Fourier transforms, linear stability analyses, dynamics in phase space and temporal space, Poincaré sections, Lyapunov exponents, and bifurcation diagrams. Nonlinear effects resulting in, for example, period doubling, coexisting basins of attraction, chaos, ghost attractors, and many other synergetic effects are important corollary studies.

One device application of particular interest is that of the optomechanical microresonator. Tunable laser light is transported via a tapered fiber and coupled into the whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of fused silica microspheres or millimeter size hollow bottle resonators to form a very efficient, low loss, high Q resonator. These mini resonators provide the platform to study such physics as enhanced Raman emission, four-wave mixing, third-harmonic generation, lasing, and other phenomena. The work is done in collaboration with experimentalist Prof. Al Rosenberger and theorist Dr. Erikk K.T. Burton of Oklahoma State University.
