Bose-Einstein Condensation in a single focused laser beamWe have created BEC in a single focused CO2 laser beam. We use a technique where the rubidium atoms are initially loaded into a beam with a broad waist to optimize the loading efficiency. Subsequently, one of the lenses through which the beam passes is moved so as to reduce the beam waist and compress the trap. This new configuration allows for efficient evaporative cooling.
Movie of the condensate forming as the amount of forced evaporation is increased. Movie showing the change in the condensate aspect ratio as it falls under gravity after being released from the trap. |
