The flashlight may be charged by shaking the magnet in and out of the copper wire coil.  This motion induces an alternating current in the coil (induction, Faraday‚Äôs Law). The diode bridge allows positive charge to collect on the upper plate of the capacitor and negative charge on the lower. The capacitor discharges through the light emitting diode when the switch is closed.
